Key Stage 1 Hub

Year 1 Continuous Provision

Our KS1 Leader, Mrs K Forster, has put in place Continuous Provision in Year 1 and Year 2 to adapt the current pedagogy of Key Stage 1 teaching and to support all areas of the curriculum through a purposeful play based approach (continuous provision).

Continuous provision has taken place for the last few years in Year 1 at Oak Tree Primary and we are excited to extend this approach to our Year 2 pupils this year through our Key Stage 1 hub.

Research suggests that children learn best through purposeful play and through being able to continually embed taught skills. We are able to offer our KS1 pupils the opportunity to learn in this way and work in smaller teacher focus groups. This enables the adult to support children instantly and address any misconceptions that arise straight away. The children are given instant feedback on what they have done well and areas for development.

What is Continuous Provision?

Carefully chosen and organised quality resources placed in areas which are always available for children to access independently across every area of learning. Children are ‘learning through play’. Research from Upstart Scotland states that many countries have found evidence that “children under the age of seven benefit from an educational approach that supports their all-round physical, emotional, social and cognitive development, rather than pushing them towards early academic achievement.”

Continuous provision is not an add on to the curriculum, it is the curriculum. Play has an essential role in supporting healthy cognitive and physical development.

The learning environment will be similar to that of our EYFS classrooms. Children will be applying their learning in a way that suits their learning style and stage of development and will have the opportunity to continually practice and apply these skills. All learning opportunities will be purposefully planned for and will cover the EYFS framework as well as the National Curriculum objectives.

Children will be given opportunities to ‘revisit and embed knowledge and skills’ whilst strengthening effective learning behaviours they have established in Foundation Stage.

Happy children make successful learners.
